Elizabeth Olsen confirms role as Scarlet Witch in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’

Samuel L. Jackson confirmed her presence early last month in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, but now we get word straight from the star’s mouth: Elizabeth Olsen is Wanda Maximoff (aka The Scarlet Witch) in Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, due out on 1 May 2015 from Disney.

Speaking with MTV about Oldboy co-star Aaron Taylor Johnson, who has been confirmed as playing Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver in the Marvel Studios film, she spoke freely about the role:

“We get to play husband and wife, and we get to play twin brother and sister,” she said. “It’s also fun because even though in ‘Godzilla’ we play husband and wife, we don’t have a lot of scenes together. I just love him. I love his family. I love his kids. I’m so excited…to actually work with each other. I think it’s going to be fun.”

Cue the speculation about the nature of that brother/sister relationship, which was an incestuous one in the Ultimates run of comics. The character was first created in 1964 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, and has been a villain for the X-Men and a member of the Avengers. In one of those odd quirks of licensing, the characters are available to both Fox and Disney, for the X-Men and Marvel Studios films respectively.

The Martha Marcy May Marlene star will be seen in Kill Your Darlings and the remake of Oldboy this year, along with a role in the Godzilla reboot next year.
