The New Mutants

Deadline has revealed that Fox has signed a deal with John Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) to co-write and direct THE NEW MUTANTS, a spin-off from the successful X-Men franchise. Boone will co-write with Knate Gwaltney. Series regular Simon Kinberg will return to produce with franchise founder Lauren Shuler Donner.

“We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters,” Kinberg remarked in the article.

THE NEW MUTANTS were first created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod in 1982, and were in fact the first spin-off of many X-Men titles. The initial graphic novel premiere came off the success of Claremont’s early 1980s successes on The Uncanny X-Men, . It has hasd several line-ups over the years, and the source has not confirmed which of these characters will make it to the film. The series would run for 100 issues an eventually lead to X-Force, another rumoured projects from the Fox franchise.

This marks the fourth spin-off due out in the next few years, with Deadpool (12 February 2016), Gambit (7 October 2016), and a third Wolverine film (3 March 2017).

No release date has been set for this film, but it could take the 13 July 2018 date that Fox currently has reserved for an X-Men film.
