Man of Steel breaks June box office record with $125.1 million

Man of Steel - Superman flying

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner’s Superman flick Man of Steel has opened to a record weekend of $125.1 million in the US, the highest North American June opening to date. That includes the $12 million midnight screenings on the Thursday.

The film exceeded expectations and pulled in $113.1 million over the Father’s Day weekend in the States, taking the crown from 2010’s Toy Story 3. An additional $71.6 million from 24 markets overseas gave the film a total opening of $196.7 million. Man of Steel represented 60 per cent of the US market share over the weekend, with box office receipts generally 51 per cent higher than they had been the previous year.

Directed by Zack Snyder, and starring Henry Cavill as Superman, the film reboots the film franchise for an expanded DC Cinematic Universe. It also stars Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Michael Shannon as Zod, Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent, Diane Lane as Martha Kent and Russell Crowe as Jor-El.

We’ll have to wait in Australia until the 27 June 2013 for the film to be released locally. In the meantime, we can enjoy this display of Henry Cavill’s really tight onesie costume in Sydney’s The Galeries.
