In a surprising announcement, Joss Whedon took the stage at Comic-Con International in San Diego to announce that the next Avengers film with be Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Age of Ultron was the big summer blockbuster from the comics world, and despite criticisms, Marvel seems keen to push this to the big screen. The plot revolves around technology invented by Hank Pym resulting in the destruction of the Marvel universe, along with a time travel story, an alternate timeline and an ending setting up new spin-off titles. Our full coverage of the comic series can be found here.

Update: Lots of speculation has commenced over Vin Diesel’s mystery role, which many already believe will be The Vision. This would be consistent with an Ultron-centric story. Plus, as MTV points out, Diesel seems to know a lots about The Vision:

“I mean, there’s two Visions, for the record. And people know one was created by Ultron, one was created by Proctor, as you know, if you follow…I’m not mentioning that character, I was just saying there are eight-thousand characters and I gave an example of how one character might have two different versions!”

Stay tuned for more details.
