Appearing at Oz Comic-Con in Melbourne today, former Angel star J. August Richards was asked by an audience member about his role in the forthcoming television show Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. When prompted about his “unconfirmed role”, he said he could “confirm that it is unconfirmed”.

Richards went on to relate a story about getting the job and being unable to tell anybody about the character he was playing. He spoke about being offered the role as a “same day call”, something he doesn’t normally do but agreed immediately due to it being for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Joss Whedon.

He also assumed that he could talk about the role once the trailer had been released, but the producers said no. However, he said that he preferred it that way, because of the element of surprise.

On working with Joss Whedon, he added that despite being a big project, it felt like “reading Shakespeare in his living room”. He went on to say it was “like working in the most awesome community theatre ever

However, one character detail he could add was that Whedon at one point whispered in the actor’s ear “You know, I want him to have more pride”. Richards teased as though he was about to say the name of the character, before saying that it would make more sense when we saw the show.

We’ll just assume he meant “Luke Cage” until somebody tells us otherwise then, kay?
