Quicksilver to appear in both Avengers 2 and X-Men: Days of Future Past

Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch

It’s now all over the web that Evan Peters will be joining the cast of X-Men: Days of Future Past, the prequel/sequel in Fox’s X-Men universe. The news came via director Bryan singer, who tweeted out the following:

As we know, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch were recently announced by Joss Whedon as appearing in his sequel to The Avengers, causing much confusion amongst fan boys and girls and the general public. The characters are firmly part of the X-Men universe, something Fox has had the rights too since Singer’s first film. Did Singer imply some kind of Fox/Disney collaboration in the #Avenger reference, or is this the start of some tit for tat inter-company rivalry?

He’s since removed that tweet, and replaced it with something a little less provocative:

So how can it come to pass that both studios will be using this character. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige revealed the answer last year to SuperHeroHype:

“We both have them. There’s a specific arrangement with those two characters that would allow us to use them with ‘Avengers,’ but not discuss or reference their mutant or Magneto-related lineage. They can use them as mutants and as Magneto’s relatives, but cannot have anything to do with The Avengers”.

So there you have it. Two speedsters racing towards the box office, one of them being really vague about his origin story. The ideal, of course, is that Fox and Disney (and Sony’s Spider-man) work out some more deals to allow cross-pollination of these comic book characters. Let’s not discount the possibility that the deal allows the actor to be in both franchises. It may never happen, of course, but we can dream, can’t we?

In other news, rumours abound that Marvel Studios are looking at Saoirse Ronan as their “model” for Scarlet Witch.
