SDCC 2013: Marvel announces ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ cast, reveals footage

SDCC 2013 - Guardians of the Galaxy cast

Marvel has confirmed key roles in Guardians of the Galaxy at the Comic-Con International in San Diego. The biggest casting news is the confirmation of Djimon Hounsu as Korath, Michael Rooker as Yondu, a bald Karren Gillan as Nebula (she took off her wig and threw it into the audience) and Beneicio Del Toro as the Collector!

The Guardians of the Galaxy flew in just for the panel, leaving again that night to resume shooting in LondonDirector James Gunn, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Djimon Hounsu as Korath (an ally to Ronan and Thanos), Lee Pace as Ronan, Karren Gillan as Nebula, Beneicio Del Toro as the Collector, Dave Bautista as Drax, Zoe Saldana as Gamora and Chris Pratt as Star-Lord. Rocket Raccoon and Groot are yet to be announced. Despite filming for less that 2 weeks, they showed some footage from the event.

The footage is said to have featured an arrested Star-Lord being loaded aboard a cargo ship, as the manifest of the ship’s crew of rogues is read aloud. Each of the crew is checked off, and Groot has to stoop to fit into frame for his mugshot. This is the best evidence we have so far that the film will be based in part on Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning’s run, with the scene sounding as though it is taken from a similar one in Annihilation: Conquest mini-series that ultimately set up the modern Guardians of the Galaxy.

The rest of the panel was one of the biggest “events” of all of the studios at the Con. Kevin Feige took the stage in Hall H at Comic-Con International in San Diego on Saturday evening for the Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Solider panels. Tom Hiddleston appeared in full Loki costume, to greet the crowd “huddled together in the darkness like rats”. Being “burdened with glorious purpose”, he declared Hall H an Arena of Midgard. With the crowd in the palm of his hand, ‘Loki’ presented footage from Thor: The Dark World, including a epic battle sequence from Game of Thrones director Alan Taylor.

He was followed by the entire cast and crew of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, who spoke about Captain America’s attempts to adapt to the modern world in the sequel. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo, Frank Grillo (Brock Rumlow), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Sebastian Stan (Bucky/Winter Soldier), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), and Chris Evans (Captain America) were all there. Naturally, exclusive footage was screened from the film, set sometime after The Avengers.
