The CW confirms ‘Arrow’/’The Flash’ spinoff ‘Legends of Tomorrow’

Ray Palmer/The Atom (Brandon Routh)

Legends of Tomorrow LogoThe long rumoured third CW show, a spin-off featuring characters from both Arrow and The Flash, has been officially greenlit by the network. It’s also got a title: LEGENDS OF TOMORROW. A mixture of heroes and villains from both shows, along with a few that we haven’t seen yet, it expands DC’s television universe in a way that can only be matched by Marvel’s Cinematic Universe.

When heroes alone are not enough… the world needs legends. Having seen the future, one he will desperately try to prevent from happening, time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter is tasked with assembling a disparate group of both heroes and villains to confront an unstoppable threat – one in which not only is the planet at stake, but all of time itself. Can this ragtag team defeat an immortal threat unlike anything they have ever known?

The concept sounds a little like a cross between the Challengers of the Unknown comic and Justice League Task Force, the latter of which actually used the phrase “legends of tomorrow” in its marketing. “Legends” was also the prefix for a series of comics released by DC in the 1980s and 1990s, which featured various members of the Justice League(s) coming together.

LEGENDS OF TOMORROW, set to debut in the US Fall 2015, will star Brandon Routh as Ray Palmer/The Atom, Caity Lotz as Sara Lance, Wentworth Miller as Captain Cold, Dominic Purcell as Heat Wave, Ciara Renee as Kendra Saunders (aka Hawkgirl), Arthur Darvill as Rip Hunter and Victor Garber as Dr. Martin Stein. It is executive produced by Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg and Marc Guggenheim.
