It’s that time of year again. The Harvey Awards have announced their final ballot of nominees for 2014. Valiant Entertainment’s Quantum and Woody leads the pack with nominations in six categories, including best new series, slightly ahead of traditional leaders Hawkeye (with five) and Saga (with four).
No massive surprises here, with the highly acclaimed titles like March (Top Shelf Productions), Battling Boy (First Second) and The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story (Dark Horse) turning up in Best Graphic Album and several other categories as well. Marvel leads on 13 nominations and Image followed closely with 11, and a literal Dark Horse on 10. DC Comics received a single nomination, for Danny Miki’s inks on Batman. It’s also great to see Yale Stewart recognised for his unofficial DC tribute comic, JL8, even if DC’s lawyers haven’t worked out whether to hire him or sue him at this point.
Unlike the Eisner Awards, the Harvey Awards are selected “exclusively by Comic-Book creators, those who write, draw, ink, color, letter, design, edit or are involved in the creative aspect of comics. Fans, retailers, distributors, and accounting personnel votes will not be counted.”
