First it was Star Wars. Then Batman V Superman. Now Fox has rounded out a weekend filled with previews by throwing a new trailer for FANTASTIC FOUR into the mix. The film, due out in August, has been shrouded in shades of mystery throughout its production, with nothing much seen until earlier this year.
The official synopsis for the film calls it a “contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team.” Rather than the adult versions of the characters that we’ve grown used to over the last few decades, this version “centres on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.”
While this new trailer does little to assuage the fears many fans have had about the significant changes to the source material, it is marked elevation from fractions of scenes we saw when the first trailer dropped in January of this year. A more holistic impression of familial connections, an important ingredient in the comic source, we’re also given a decent look at the special effects involved in bringing stretchiness, orange rock and flames to life. That said, it’s not until about halfway that this begins to look “heroic”, which may give us an indication of how much weight the film places on the actual superhero team on screen.
FANTASTIC FOUR is released on 6 August 2015 in Australia, and 7 August 2015 in the US from 20th Century Fox.
