There’s certainly no chance that Marvel are under-marketing the Guardians of the Galaxy at the moment, with the next Marvel Cinematic Universe film due out in August. While that film will be based on the current incarnation of the Guardians of the Galaxy, created by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning in 2008, a previous team had held the name. That latter team will form the basis of Guardians 3000, with fan-favourite writer Abnett tackling writing duties.
First appearing in Marvel Super-Heroes with issue #18 (January 1969), the original Guardians were active in an alternative timeline of Earth’s 31st century. Largely popping in and out of Avengers missions, they most famously encountered each other in the “Korvac Saga” crossover of the late 1970s, when all things sci-fi were hot property. The team was revamped in the 1990s and quietly forgotten for a while, although they did make an appearance in the modern Guardians series in a future where their universe had been mostly destroyed. It is the only time that the two team have interacted. Yet with Marvel’s penchant for all things wibbly, wobbly, timey and wimey, could it only be a matter of time before they meet again?
This series joins the current Guardians of the Galaxy ongoing by Brian Michael Bendis, and the forthcoming Rocket Raccoon (by Skottie Young) and Legendary Star-Lord ongoing (by Sam Humphries and artist Paco Medina) in July this year.
