DC Comics has announced that they will be releasing another new addition to the Batman family in November. Gotham By Midnight will take a look at Gotham’s supernatural side with Ray Fawkes writing and Ben Templesmith on art duties.
Fawkes, already versed in DC’s supernatural universe through Constantine and Batman Eternal, told DC All Access that this would be one of the spookiest takes on Batman yet. “Gotham By Midnight is going to be the scariest book in Gotham,” “It’s the book about the stuff that Batman needs help to handle: the ghosts and monsters. The city’s under a curse, and Batman’s not able to handle those guys. So this is a book about the other characters Batman hands this stuff to. There are some police who have dealt with hauntings and monsters and vampires and whatnot.
“Their star detective is Jim Corrigan, who’s known as the Spectre. Not to the police, not to anyone else, but Batman knows.” Those looking forward to seeing the Spectre showing up will be pleased to hear that this is part of Fawkes’ plan. Speaking with Blastr, he commented
“Jim Corrigan’s terrible secret is he carries the divine judgment of God around in his body, not of his own free will. So he’s better motivated than anybody to get involved whenever a big, supernatural monster shows up on the scene. If he doesn’t do something, sooner or later the Spectre is going to handle it, and he has an Old Testament way of handling things. We will be seeing the Spectre here and there, but that’s usually what happens when Corrigan messes up and doesn’t get it handled in time.”
Other characters in the Midnight Shift include Corrigan’s partner Detective Lisa Drake, forensic consultant Dr. Szandor Tarr and a religious consultant, Sister Justine, a nun “with a particular talent”.
Australian artist Ben Templesmith is known for his supernatural work on 30 Days of Night, Ten Grand and more recently, Squidder. “His art is so perfect for this. Every page has like this hellish energy on it.” It’s probably no coincidence that the title resembles frequent Templesmith collaborator Steve Niles’ 2008 horror mini-series, Gotham After Midnight.
Gotham By Midnight is released on 26 November 2014 from DC Comics.
