The big screen version of Thanos was revealed as Josh Brolin at Comic-Con International in San Diego last week, but his comic book counterpart has an even bigger starring adventure coming up in next week’s Thanos: The Infinity Revelation, and original graphic novel from his creator Jim Starlin.
Marvel has sent over a first look at the art from the book, promising that Thanos will “cross paths with the Guardians of the Galaxy, Adam Warlock, the Silver Surfer, the Annihilators and ultimately his one true love, Death!” The most exciting aspect of this is the return of Adam Warlock, who was presumed dead with his cocoon still under the watch of the Annihilators (back in Annihilators: Earthfall in early 2012). The character was originally created as an allegorical Messiah in the pages of Fantastic Four in 1967, but was later revived in the 1970s by Starlin with his more cosmic leanings.
The graphic novel will see Warlock back from the dead and teaming up with once sworn enemy Thanos, squaring off “against the most powerful beings in the universe”. Marvel’s commitment to their cosmic universe, on both page and screen, has been impressive this year. An event comic such as this coming only a week after the US release of Guardians of the Galaxy at the cinemas will perhaps direct casual fans back to the comics, with a handy self-contained story. Diamond is reporting that graphic novel sales continue to rise, as periodical sales continue to decline. Starlin, of course, is well-versed in the Marvel graphic novel, having the honour of penning the very first official Marvel graphic novel in The Death of Captain Marvel back in 1982.
Additionally, this original graphic novel will also include a code for a bonus digital edition of Thanos: The Infinity Revelation, redeemable for reading via the Marvel Comics app (for iPhone®, iPad®, iPad Touch® & Android devices) and online in the Marvel Digital Comics Shop. This code is included at no extra charge, allowing fans to keep their copy of Thanos: The Infinity Revelation safe on their bookshelves.
Thanos: The Infinity Revelation is on sale wherever comics and books are sold next Wednesday, 6 August 2014.
