After months of speculation, X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner has confirmed to Total Film that Channing Tatum is her Gambit. While sources indicate that no paperwork has been signed as yet, Donner is talking as though it is a done deal.
“Well you know he’s a rogue, Channing. He’s a rascal, just like Remy LeBeau, and he can handle the action, we all know that. He’s got a really good heart, because I know him personally, I did a movie with him. So I think he’ll be great, he’ll be great for Gambit, and he’s a southerner too, he’s not from New Orleans but he is a southerner and he understands that world, and you know Gambit loves New Orleans.”
According to THR, Tatutm’s version of Remy “Gambit” LeBeau will be introduced in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse, and then go on to appear in his own solo film. This could be the previously announced Untitled Fox Marvel Film for 13 July 2018, which we now know is not going to be a Fantastic Four/X-Men crossover.
The character had previously been portrayed by Taylor Kitsch in the maligned X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and this recasting suggests that some distance is being put between that film and the future of the X-Men franchise. With Hugh Jackman repeatedly talking about his days as Wolverine being numbered, it makes sense that Fox would want to structure the next phase of the franchise around another big Hollywood name.
