In a very surprising move, X-Men: Days of Future Past director and serial Tweeter Bryan Singer has revealed the title of the next X-Men film will be X-Men: Apocalypse. The title came via Singer’s Twitter account (of course), where he simply stated “#Xmen #Apocalypse 2016!”
Apocalypse was introduced in the pages of X-Factor during the 1980s by Louise and Walt Simonson, and is historically a X-Men villain. With a back-story that goes back 5000 years to Ancient Egypt, the character (real name En Sabah Nur) had his moment in the sun with the Age of Apocalypse storyline that began in 1995, where an alternative timeline replaced the current Marvel universe.
It follows that a time-travel story in X-Men: Days of Future Past could quite readily set up this film, along with the promised X-Force film.
The Wrap gives the release date as 27 May 2016, and while very little information has been announced, we will assume that Hugh Jackman is in the cast.
X-Men: Days of Future Past is set for released on 22 May 2014 in Australia (and 23 May in the US) from Fox. X-Men: Apocalypse is out on 27 May 2016.
