After what seems like an eternity of speculation about 20 Century Fox‘s FANTASTIC FOUR reboot, we finally get a first official look (of sorts) at some of the costuming thanks to Collider. It marks our first official look at anything from the film to date.
In an interview with director Josh Trank and producer/screenwriter Simon Kinberg, the duo addresses the lack of information and imagery up until this point. The former notes that “we really want the audience to have the proper reaction to this material seeing it for the first time.”
However, if continued internet speculation and derision is something that Trank and Kinberg were keen to avoid, the choice of image released (below) is sure to merely fan the flames of fandom. Wearing something akin to a BMX outfit or extreme sports protective gear, and featuring our first look at Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm (aka The Human Torch) the costume looks (hopefully) far from complete.
Trank’s approach to the film may be more than hinted at in his influences, citing David Cronenberg’s body horror as a source of inspiration:
I always viewed Fantastic Four and the kind of weirdness that happens to these characters and how they’re transformed to really fall in line more with a Cronenberg-ian science fiction tale of something horrible happening to your body and [it] transforming out of control. And the potential for a hard sci-fi take on that material makes me really excited.
FANTASTIC FOUR is released on 6 August 2015 in Australia, and 7 August 2015 in the US from 20th Century Fox.
