Amidst a flurry of rumours that an X-Force film announcement is forthcoming at next week’s Comic-Con, THR is reporting that Kick Ass 2 director Jeff Wadlow is writing a screenplay for an X-Force film with an eye to also direct.
The rumours began with various sites reporting the website X-ForceMovie.com being registered by 20th Century Fox recently. X-Force co-creator Rob Liefeld semi-confirmed the plans for the film on Twitter, adding it was “NOT news to me, glad everyone is excited.”
The X-Force first began in 1991 in the pages of New Mutants, but soon after expanded into its own series. The original line-up featured the characters Boom Boom, Cable, Cannonball, Domino,Feral, Shatterstar and Warpath. In later issues, X-Force‘s roster would include Siryn, Rictor and Sunspot.
In 2001, the series was cancelled and replaced with a different team of misfits, by writer Peter Milligan and artist Mike Allred, and this eventually formed X-Statix. However, all indications are that Liefeld and writer Fabian Nicieza’s team will be used.
This is consistent with Fox’s plans to expand the X-Men universe beyond X-Men: Days of Future Past, perhaps creating a cinematic universe using X-Men characters similar to the way Marvel Studios has with The Avengers.
Expect to hear more at SDCC next week.
