Speaking with EW, Jeff Robinov, president of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, has revealed that the forthcoming Superman film, Man of Steel, will be the first in a series of cinematic offerings from DC Comics.
“I think you’ll see that, going forward, anything can live in this world,” he said. “[Nolan’s] Batman was deliberately and smartly positioned as a stand-alone…We’ll announce something in the next several weeks that will hopefully position the DC characters and the movies we’re going to be making.”
Writer David S. Goyer has dismissed the idea of sequel bait as well, so don’t expect the equivalent of Nick Fury (Amanda Waller?) to turn up at the end of Man of Steel. He is following Nolan’s advice to “put everything you have into this film and then worry about the next film later”. So expect more things like the hint of the Joker from the end of Batman Begins.
Christopher Nolan has also counted himself out from any Justice League involvement, currently prepping his sci-fi film Interstellar.
So begin your speculation about what this next announcement is going to be. The Justice League movie itself? The long overdue Wonder Woman film? Mister Terrific: The Motion Picture? The possibilities are endless.
Man of Steel is released in the US on 14 June 2013. It will follow in Australia on 27 June 2013 from Roadshow Films.
