This is the area of the Internet that gets a little bit reactive. Prone to being excitable and geeky, we’ll post anything that vaguely resembles news in the hopes of getting the next scoop. So a few hours ago, actor Simon Pegg went ahead and tweeted several photos labelled “Fun at Marvel”. The final one of these has him pointing at a picture of Ant-Man.
This has naturally led many to believe that Simon Pegg will be playing the lead in the 2015 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Ant-Man. Or he could simply be riffing on Vin Diesel’s similar social media tactics last month, which ultimately led to the revelation that he’s voicing Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy.
Evidence for the assumption is that Ant-Man is being directed by long-time collaborator Edgar Wright, who has just finished a press junket with the character for The World’s End, concluding their ‘Cornetto’ Trilogy’ which started with Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.
Then again, it’s also just a single photo. We all jumped to the conclusion that Vin Diesel was playing The Vision on similar “evidence”, and it we wouldn’t put it past a knowing Pegg to be playing a prank with the Internet. We believed a man can fly, so we’ll believe anything.
UPDATE: Pegg has updated his Tweets with something of a rebuttal – “FFS the Internet. All I did was point at the central character in my dear friend’s next movie, because I’m excited for him.” This doesn’t rule out Pegg appearing in a Marvel movie, of course, or even appearing in Ant-Man. Still, we did issue a warning of our own at the top of this article.
Ant-Man is currently due for release on 6 November 2015 from Disney.
