‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ sequel announced for 2016

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES

Following a strong opening weekend, the Michael Bay-produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is unsurprisingly getting a sequel from Paramount and Nickelodeon Movies. It’s currently pegged for 3 June 2016, a date currently clear of any competitor superheroes.

Despite incredibly poor reviews, currently sitting at 19% on the all-important Rotten Tomatoes, Jonathan Liebesman’s film opened to an estimated $65 in the US, with an additional $28.7 million from around the globe. It was one of the strongest August openings for a film, although is a long way from $94 million that went to Guardians of the Galaxy the previous weekend’s. That film dropped to No. 2 on the US box office, taking an additional $41 million this past weekend, but remains the strongest performer of the US summer.

The sequel will once again be produced by Michael Bay and his partners Andrew Form and Brad Fuller at Platinum Dunes, along with Galen Walker and Scott Mednick says The Hollywood Reporter. It has not yet been announced whether Liebesman will return to direct the sequel.

Based on the comics series that Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird created all the way back in 1984, one that went on to be the flagship of the black and white boom in comics and spawned several animated series and feature films. The 2016 sequel will mark the Turtles’ sixth theatrical appearance.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is now in US cinemas. It doesn’t open in Australia until 11 September 2014 from Paramount.
