After months of inactivity, it’s a veritable flood of FANTASTIC FOUR as 20th Century Fox drops the first trailer for Josh Trank’s reboot of the franchise.
The results are somewhat mixed. It begins with the same vague voiceover and range of cornfields that many modern trailers have opened with, but opens into something a little more epic than many of the advance “Chronicle 2” prognosticators had predicted. Indeed, this is a much bigger picture than we had been led to believe, although this is still a teaser trailer and difficult to form too many opinions on. That said, it is equally hard to get a grip on the film’s tone from this, as it is all very dark and brooding.
Some observations of ours, expanded on in the “trailer commentary” from Trank and producer/co-writer Simon Kinberg below:
- The film is inspired by the Ultimate Fantastic Four comics co-created Brian Michael Bendis, Mark Millar, and Adam Kubert. Trank indicated he was inspired by Bryan Hitch’s art, who designed the costumes and characters for that series
- The Thing is naked!
- The suits that were revealed yesterday (for the clothed members of the Fantastic Four) are confirmed as being black and act as “containment suits”. It is rumoured they will have more traditional colours by the end of the film
- The film has some Earth based and inter-dimensional travelling
- We should be prepared for what’s coming. We just don’t know what that is.
FANTASTIC FOUR is released on 6 August 2015 in Australia, and 7 August 2015 in the US from 20th Century Fox.
