One of the films that has us most excited for 2014 is Guardians of the Galaxy, and now director James Gunn has confirmed via Facebook that regular collaborator Tyler Bates will be providing the score for the film.
Bates has previously worked on both Slither and Super with Gunn, and comic book fans will know his work from Watchmen, 300 and The Crow: City of Angels. In his post, Gunn talks about the unorthodox way that Bates adds music to films, going against the typical ‘shoot first, score later’ approach.
Grateful to be working with my favorite composer, Tyler Bates, on Guardians of the Galaxy. Unlike most films, Tyler writes huge chunks of the score first so that I can actually film to the music. During action scenes and huge dramatic moments we blare the score on set so that the cast, crew, and camera can move in harmony with the music. Music is often an afterthought in film, but never for us. And everything Tyler’s done so far has been amazing!
The film stars Glenn Close as Nova Prime, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Djimon Hounsu as Korath, Lee Pace as Ronan, Karren Gillan as Nebula, Beneicio Del Toro as the Collector, Dave Bautista as Drax, Zoe Saldana as Gamora and Chris Pratt as Star-Lord. Rocket Raccoon is yet to be announced.
Guardians of the Galaxy is released on 1 August 2014 from Marvel Studios via Disney.
